My name is David. Not that David. I’m David the
Gnome. I have been exiled to the Valley of the Giants. So now, I am “David
Among the Giants” and that is the name of this story.
I live beside a great two-headed Snake. It would be scary,
except the Snake never moves. I think each head is waiting for the other to
make its attack. If only they knew what would happen then.
Sometimes I dream of my old Gnome village. Everyone was tiny
there.
I built myself a chair, but when I sat down, it broke. I
cannot cut down the trees, because they are too big. Maybe I can find a Giant
to do it for me.
I went to find some, but I was blocked by a great
ocean that would surely drown a tiny Gnome.
Yet as I walked, the water parted
before me. Somehow, only my feet got wet.
First I found the great Bison. I’ve been told the sound of
their smashing heads, created the valley itself. But when I tried to talk to
them, they just ran away. Maybe they didn’t want to squish me.
Next I found the great Elephants. I’ve heard that whole
villages of Gnomes have made homes in their giant carcasses. But when I tried
to speak, they also ran away. Maybe they don’t like tiny Gnomes. Maybe they think of us like fleas.
Next I found the great Dragons. I think when they take
flight, their wings block out the sun. But even the Dragons ran away. Maybe
they were resisting the urge to eat me up.
One tripped and fell to the floor as it was running away. I was surprised it didn’t
just use it wings. I couldn’t even tell if it had any.
“Don’t hurt me!” it cried, as I climbed on its belly to get
a better look. “I am just a lowly Lizard!”
His breath was short and hard as though my tiny body was
crushing him.
“How could I hurt you?” I replied , “I am just a tiny Gnome!”
“Your not tiny!” the Lizard cried, “You’re huge!”
And while that would explain the broken chair. And the paralyzed
snakes. And the parting water. And all those giants running away. I laughed
harder then I had ever laughed before.
Because I’m tiny,
I’m tiny,
I’m tiny.
